Women on Boards is an annual panel discussion designed to educate and prepare women for board service. Having originated in Minneapolis in 2002, Women on Boards is now held annually in Chicago, St. Louis, Denver, Dallas, San Francisco and Atlanta. A panel of top-level executives with extensive board experience will share their knowledge and the necessary tools for serving as a director. Discussion will focus on being an effective board member, how to position oneself to serve on a board and how to transition from serving on non-profit boards to for profit boards. An interactive Q&A and reception will follow.

"This year it's the weekday parade route on the sidewalk from the EMBARCADERO PLAZA thru the financial district with stops at the 'stations of stupid' for the time honored rituals and traditions so beloved by the people down at the bureau of rituals and traditions. Givin the annual sub text (there's a sub in every parade), that of giving homage to the business of religion and the religion of buisness, this year promises extra fun in the concrete canyons of greed and deceit. Stick the head of your favorite overpaid ceo on a stick (and the amount of his/her crime)....bring PINK SLIPS and EVICTION NOTICES for the HQs of the not so free market...print your own money for bail outs, pay offs and buy ins. Fun for all ages! Drums and other noise production devices encouraged. Attend at your own risk. Watch your step. Spread the word."

New docent tours of the Historic Gardens of Alcatraz are revealing the “softer side of ‘The Rock’” to those who visit the popular national park site. Held each Friday and Sunday at 9:30 a.m., the docent tours leave from the island’s dock area, so those interested must take the 9am boat from Pier 33. There is no additional charge once visitors are on the island. For those who can’t fit a docent tour into their visit, a self-guided walking tour of the gardens is described in a new brochure, which is available for free at the dock on Alcatraz. During the docent tour, visitors explore five garden areas inspired by the work of many early gardeners on The Rock. When the prison was closed in 1963, the gardens were abandoned. Nonetheless, nearly 200 species of shrubs, succulents, bulbs and perennials continued to survive in rocky soil with no fertilizers or supplemental water. Vintage images and historical records of the Alcatraz gardens from the mid-1800s through 1963 were carefully reviewed for the “Historic Gardens of Alcatraz” preservation project, which was spearheaded by the Garden Conservancy in partnership with the Golden Gate National Parks and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy.
