PARKING REGULATIONS
Parking: Parking is at a premium in San Francisco. Parking regulations
are strictly enforced in all parts of the city. Read posted signs
carefully. Improperly parked car can be ticketed and may even be subject
to towing (at your expense). This is costly and time consuming. Save
yourself headaches by abiding by time limits in street spaces, parking
in designated lots or at parking meters which accept quarters only.
The Hills: To prevent runaway cars, the city enforces a law requiring
drivers to curb their wheels. When parking UPHILL, turn wheels toward
the street; DOWNHILL, turn wheels into curb.
Curb Colors: Strict laws govern parking spaces designated with colored
curbs. Expect hefty fines and possible towing if you park improperly:
RED: No stopping or parking ever
YELLOW: 30 min. loading for commercial vehicles only
GREEN: 10 min. parking limit
WHITE: 5 min. limit/business hrs
BLUE: handicapped parking only
Driving Laws: Unless otherwise posted, speed limits are 25mph on surface
streets and 65mph on freeways (unless otherwise posted). California
enforces seatbelt and child safety seat laws, and there are strict
drunk-driving laws which carry severe consequences.
SMOKING LAWS
San Francisco restricts smoking in most enclosed public spaces, such as
offices, restaurants and shops. Please inquire or take note of posted
signs. Under California law, smoking is not permitted in bars.
LIQUOR LAWS
Most bars and nightclubs are required to stop serving alcohol at 2am.
Drinking age in California is 21 years and older; proof of
identification is required. Laws are strictly enforced. Liquor stores
and grocery stores, as well as some drugstores, can sell packaged
alcoholic beverages between 6am and 2am daily.
Under California Law, smoking is not permitted in bars and restaurants.
